ADHD Diet
ADHD is also called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Though ADHD can affect adults, teens, and children; it is basically a childhood disorder. ADHD is a condition that includes two components viz. trouble to focus on tasks and lack of ability to pay attention.
Children affected with ADHD usually show signs of hyperactivity, inattention, and/or impulsivity in particular behavior. Children with ADHD condition find very difficult to remain still and are in nonstop activities. They are easily distracted and do not complete their tasks. Usually they talk too much and act impulsively without thinking. If you explain them something they do not seem to pay attention.
If you observe the above stated signs and symptoms of ADHD for six months, you should consult your child’s doctor. And if your child is diagnosed with ADHD, you must get him/her treated for the disorder. Though there is no cure for ADHD, you can still help your child to lessen the symptoms of ADHD. Along with medications, special diet which is known as ADHD diet can be followed to decrease the symptoms of ADHD.
Experts and nutritionists believe that ADHD diet is very beneficial for ADHD patients. In many cases, ADHD is associated with diet, which includes nutritional deficiencies and food allergies. Let us see what an ADHD diet is.
ADHD diet includes consumption of high-protein diet. Hence, patients can eat foods that are rich in protein like nuts, beans, eggs, meat and cheese. High-protein diet will help your child in concentration. So, you can serve protein foods such as protein shake, protein supplements in your child’s breakfast.
While on ADHD diet, your child must eat more complex carbohydrates such as vegetables. He can also eat some fruits like apples, oranges, pears, grapefruit, kiwi and tangerines. If your child consumes complex carbohydrates at dinner, it will help him to sleep. But eating simple carbs like white rice, corn syrup, candy, skinless potatoes, sugar, honey, etc should be limited or avoided.
Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids should be taken by your ADHD child. Hence, you can give him Brazil nuts, walnuts, olive oil, canola oil, tuna, salmon, and other cold-water white fish. Omega 3 supplement can be given. A multi-vitamins supplement will also be very beneficial.
Foods to be avoided in case of ADHD diet include all yellow foods, junk, fried and processed foods, fruit juices, sugary foods, and food colorings.
