Best Way to Reduce Cholesterol

Excess of cholesterol in the blood stream is nothing but a clear indication of silent death. Heart attack is the more likely result of high cholesterol condition. But not everyone is sure about the amount of cholesterol that is just right for the body. There are quite a number of food items in our diet that actually determine our cholesterol level. If we can increase or decrease these foods then we can hope to achieve the level of cholesterol that is just right for the body.

Oat Bran

Oatmeal is a high fiber diet that has inherent properties to keep the cholesterol level in check. Oat bran is actually more beneficial than whole oats as they reduce the insulin requirement for diabetic patients and also checks the level of blood cholesterol.

Oats do not have any fat or sodium with zero risk to heart. It is recommended that you have two tablespoon of oat on a daily basis mixed with milk or in the form of porridge.

Olive

Olive oil is excellent for improving lipid profile. Olive oil is full of mono-unsaturated fats that greatly change the cholesterol level in a human body. Recent studies have also shown that deaths among people have gone down a great deal as they used olive oil as their cooking medium.

This type of oil increases the level of HDL and decreases the level of LDL and also reduces the chances of clots or blockages in arteries. Olive oil is said to be a great fighter against high cholesterol as it is very stable oil and does not get oxidized quickly like the other cooking mediums. Obviously you can also help yourself by cutting down on red meat and milk products which are high in saturated fats.

A healthy person does not need more than 300 mg of cholesterol on a daily basis but those with heart ailments should restrict their intake to a maximum of 200 mg only. The total fat intake should not exceed 20% of the total calorie intake.

Always try to increase the intake of fish as they are good source of Omega – 3 fatty acids – a highly reliable fighter against bad cholesterol. Lastly don’t eat kidney, liver or brain as they have exceptionally high cholesterol content.
