Asthma is such a condition that can aggravate due to a variety of factors. Food is one of them. So the asthma patients tend to worry much for the food they eat. That is a good approach and they should follow a proper diet to remain fit. A proper diet can reduce the excessive activity of the immune cells which react to the allergens. Some foods help in reducing the free radicals and that result in less severe asthma attacks and improved lung function. So, what should be included in the diet of an asthma patient? The first thing that should show on the plate is plenty of fresh and green vegetables like cabbage, spinach, parsley, etc.

The best way to have them is by lightly steaming them to retain their nutrients. These contain bio-flavonoids which help in reducing the production of free radicals. Flavoring food with onion and garlic helps as they are good sources of antioxidants too.

Fresh fruit should always be a part of the diet for the asthma patient. So eat plenty of tomatoes, strawberries, apricots, citrus fruits, etc. They are the best fighters against pollution, one of the main causes of aggravation of asthma. The powerful antioxidants in the fruits do the job. Fruits also contain vitamins like C and E and beta-Carotene which are beneficial for the lungs. Quercitin is one beneficial substance that is found in plenty in apple and onion.Oily fish, preferably baked, can provide relief to the inflamed lungs. Being a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids and lean protein makes fish a compulsory addition to the diet. In fact, fish oil also provides the necessary fat for the body. Use extra virgin olive oil in food instead of sunflower or safflower oil.

It helps if one can reduce the amount of salt taken. On the other hand spices like oregano, coriander, fenugreek, basil, etc are good sources of antioxidants and also helps in blocking the production of leukotriennes, a pro-inflammatory chemical. They can also add taste to the food. Do not forget to add good amount of ginger and turmeric for good results. When talking of importance of diet for asthma patients it also needs to be told about what to stay away from. Avoid all mucus forming food like dairy products, chocolates and refined flour and white sugar. Excess salt can aggravate the conditions of asthma.
