Foods to Help Relieve Heartburn

Heartburn is a common disorder of the digestive system affecting many people throughout the world. Though heartburn may be a cause of a more serious underlying disease, more often than not heartburn is caused by wrong eating and lifestyle habits.

Heartburn is generally a burning sensation caused in the upper part of the stomach.

When acidic digestive juices from the stomach enter the esophagus, they irritate the esophagus and lead to heartburn. Though you can relieve heartburn with the help of several over the counter drugs, modifications to your eating habits and consumption of certain types of food can greatly help relieve the problem of heartburn.

Oily and greasy food along with too many spices can lead to heartburn and acidity. If you want to eat foods heavy on spice and oil, consume your heavy meal before 3-4 hours before bedtime as this will give your stomach enough time to digest the food. Also, limit your intake of alcohol, aerated beverages, chocolates, etc as these can cause heartburn and poor digestion.

There are many fruits and vegetables that can help reduce heartburn. Carrot juice and cabbage juice is considered effective for heartburn problems.

Fruits such as banana, apple and papaya are helpful when dealing with heartburn and acidity. Banana contains potassium that helps reduces the acidity of the stomach. Banana also contains certain useful enzymes that form a thick mucus barrier in the stomach, protecting it against the adverse affects of acidic digestive juices.

Ginger has many anti-inflammatory properties and has been known to help digestive problems. Drinking ginger tea or taking ginger capsules after a heavy meal can help you deal with acid reflux effectively. Dairy products such as cold milk, yoghurt with active cultures, cream cheese, etc are also useful in relieving acid reflux symptoms.

Cold milk instantly soothes heartburn symptoms as it naturally counteracts the acidity of digestive juices, while the calcium component of it pushes the acid juices down the esophagus. Yoghurt has bacteria which are considered very healthy for the digestive system and helps better digestion.

Increase your intake of whole grains as the fiber contained in whole grains will improve the overall health of the digestive system, reducing the formation of acidic juices in the stomach.
