Gastroparesis is a medical condition in which the stomach muscles become weak and do not function properly. A person suffering from gastroparesis is not able to digest solid food properly. This usually leads to delayed emptying of stomach.More than one million Americans suffer from gastroparesis. It is usually caused by conditions such as diabetes, certain drugs and nervous system disorders. Presently there is no cure for gastroparesis. But its symptoms can be controlled significantly with specific dietary changes. However, before introducing any changes in your diet you should consult your doctor. Given below are some dietary guidelines for gastroparesis diet.

If you are diagnosed with gastroparesis you must begin a liquid diet consisting of skim milk, clear juice, rice milk or broth. You can consume pureed foods including fish or baked chicken mixed with broth, cooked vegetables and fruits, cereals enriched with milk and pastas. Vomiting is common among gastroparesis patients; hence drink adequate water to prevent dehydration.

You should avoid taking large meals. Break your large meals into small meals and consume 6 to 8 times daily. This is recommended because it takes more effort to digest a large meal. It is difficult for people suffering from gastroparesis to digest high fiber foods. Hence if you suffer from this problem you should consume low fiber foods and avoid foods rich in fiber such as raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes.

You should also consume foods that are low in fat because fat slows down the process of digestion. The foods that are left undigested in the stomach form bezoars. Hence foods like coconut, berries, apples, Brussels sprouts, potato and dried figs should be avoided. You should not consume greasy or fried vegetables as it can exaggerate the symptoms of gastroparesis.

The diet for gastroparesis should include sufficient calories and protein. To fulfill the need of calories you should consume liquids high in fat such as milkshakes. You can also take nutritional supplement such as Boost, or Ensure.

If you find difficulty in digesting solid foods you should liquefy them in a food processor or a blender before consumption. Smoothies can be of great help to you. And if you are able to digest solid foods you should take white bread, English muffins, bagels, small portion of white rice, soda crackers, and arrowroot cookies. Low fat yogurt, dairy products and fortified cereals are good for you.
