Gout Diet

Gout is a type of arthritis characterized by sudden swelling, redness, pain, warmth and inflammation of joints. It may affect one or multiple joints at a time and is caused because of the deposition of needle like crystals of uric acid in the joints.

Uric acid deposits are formed due to the excessive production of uric acid with in the body. Sometimes the kidney fails to expel the uric acid from the body leading to the development of uric acid in the body. Increased consumption of foods that contains purines is another reason for gout as the purines breakdown finally to uric acid. By controlling the food intake the gout patients get relief from gout to a major rextend.

Gout Diet

A diet rich in complex carbohydrates like whole grains, vegetables and fruits are ideal for gout. Cherry and strawberry are also found to be useful in treating gout as it aids in lowering the uric acid in the body and thus reduces the inflammation. Essential fatty acids in salmon, tuna, nuts, flax seeds etc are also good. Foods rich with vitamin C, bromelain and low fat dairy foods are also ideal for gout patients.

The patients are recommended to under take five days fast and during this period they should consume only water and orange juice. This may help to remove the accumulated uric acid from the body. Warm water enema is also ideal for cleansing the bowel.

Once the acute symptoms get settled then adopt a three days all fruit diet in which the patients can take three meals of fruits per day. The fruits can be apple, grapes, peaches, pear, pineapple, oranges etc. There after the patient has to follow the diet given below.


Take either broken wheat along with butter milk or milk or whole wheat bread. Also include fruits like mangoes, apricots, apples, oranges, figs etc.


Have steamed vegetables like beets, watercress, lettuce, celery, squash, turnips, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, cabbage etc. You can also take wheat tortilla made out of whole wheat flour, buttermilk and cottage cheese.


Dinner can be salad made out of sprouts of green gram, alfalfa and raw vegetables like cabbage, carrot and tomato. Whole wheat bread along with butter can also be included in the dinner.

While following the gout diet the patient must avoid foods that contain purine. High purine foods include meat, yeast, sardines, meat extracts, scallops, beer, mackerel, anchovies etc.

Medium purine foods include saltwater fish, shell fish, meat soups, broth, mushrooms, asparagus, cauliflower, oatmeal, legumes, wheat germ, eggs, cereals etc. Also avoid white flour, refined grains, coffee, soft drinks, gelatin, tea, sugar etc.
