It is true that foods like cheese and potatoes are considered high in calories, but they also have plenty of nutrients that growing children need as their metabolism is higher.

Cheese is rich in calcium and protein. Therefore, it is necessary for the growth and development of strong bones and teeth. Potatoes are a rich source of carbohydrates which is necessary to keep us satiated and provide energy that keeps us going.

It’s important to cook them in a healthy way for instance, bake them instead of making French fries. It’s that fat that is harmful not the potatoes. For all types of food, one has to indulge in moderation. Also at the same time it is important to encourage children to eat healthy to live an active lifestyle.

Some healthy recipes for kids include:

Cheese soup

This soup is a wholesome meal by itself, providing all the essential nourishment to kids.

Ingredients required:

1 cup carrot, finely chopped
¼ cup celery, finely chopped
¼ cup onion finely chopped
1 ½ cups chicken or vegetable broth
2 cups milk
¼ cup all purpose flour
1 cup cheddar cheese
A dash of white pepper

Method and preparation:

1. Combine the carrots, celery and onions in a saucepan, add the broth, and bring to a boil, simmer for 15 minutes.

2. Add the milk, flour, and pepper into the broth mixture and stir well, till thick. Add the cheese, stirring, till it melts. To serve, pour in a soup bowl, garnish with some grated cheese, celery and serve hot. This recipe serves 4.

Sauteed Potatoes

This is a simple and healthy recipe and can makes an ideal dish for children as it is loaded with carbohydrates and essential oils.

Ingredients required:

2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Dash of Dried oregano

Method and preparation:

1. Cook the potatoes in salted boiling water for 15 minutes, drain and remove skin. Cut into cubes.

2. Heat the olive oil in a pan and saute the potatoes till golden brown, sprinkle with salt, pepper and herbs before serving. This recipe serves up to 4 persons.

Fruit Salad

This recipe is colorful, attractive, appetizing and extremely healthy for children as it is a blend of all vital nutrients and vitamins.

Ingredients required:

3 cups shredded cabbage
1 orange, peeled and sectioned
1 cup halved seedless red grapes
½ cup sliced celery
1 cup yogurt
1 small apple cored and chopped
½ cup mix dry fruits (walnuts, pine nuts, sunflower seeds)

Method and preparation:

1. Mix the cabbage, orange, grapes, and celery. For the dressing combine the yogurt, apple. Spread the dressing over the cabbage mix.

2. Cover and chill. To serve, toss the salad, sprinkle with the nuts and serve chilled.
