Is Raw Milk Really Safe?

These days there is a prominent increase in usage of organic food and products from farmer’s market and people want to be well informed about where their food originates from.But not all natural food is beneficial to health, specially in this time and age.

Certain food type especially raw milk can be harmful even if they are organic and locally produced. Milk and other dairy products that are bought from store are pasteurized and homogenized. In pasteurization the milk is heated to a specific temperature for a particular amount of time to kill harmful bacteria that maybe present.

Whereas in homogenization the milk and its component is forced through a very fine screen at a high pressure, resulting in an uniform liquid that will not separate, this helps in maintaining the creamy texture of the milk and leaves it fresh for a longer time.Raw milk, on the other hand, comes straight from the cows who  are fed fresh organic green grass and ready for consumption.

Those who vouch for raw milk claim that it is is tastier and healthier in the natural state. Since the milk has not been pasteurized or homogenized they claim that the beneficial vitamins, minerals, and enzymes is more than the off the rack milk packets that are available in various stores.

Some studies also claim that the enzymes and bacteria left behind in the milk help people with lactose intolerance to drink it.Also, the raw milk users claim that they help reduce asthama and allergies in children, help prevent osteoporosis too. But there is no substantial evidence to prove this point.

The main risks involved in consuming raw milk is that it may contain a whole lot of harmful bacteria because it hasnt been pasteurized. These pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus, Campylobacter jejuni, E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and Yersinia enterocolitica can be very fatal and harmful to your body.Due to this negligence there’s been at least 1 death amongst 900 people thanks to the consumption of raw unpasteurized milk.

Raw milk may be very harmful for babies, pregnant women and those with low immunity system.Since their body is unprepared for the bacteria and unwanted pathogens, they’ll fall ill, fatally even. It is better to keep yourself safe and avoid having raw milk or milk products especially if your immunity is low or you are pregnant.
