Tea is often referred to as divine medicine because of its healing powers. Though various concoctions are called tea these days, the original tea is still the leaves and tender leaf buds of camellia sinesis. Known as ‘cha’ in the Far East, it is known to clear mind, strengthen the internal organs, enhance immunity and keep away cardio vascular problems.

To get the maximum benefit out of this wonder drink, it is necessary to at least know the few basics about tea. Tea is categorized into five types depending upon the intensity of the brew. They are –

White tea – usually the costliest of all varieties, it is the lightest form of tea which is produced from the downy buds. It is generally known for its medicinal properties.

Green tea – it is produced from the unfermented or unoxidized natural leaf which also has many medicinal properties and is very refreshing.

Oolong tea – it is a semi fermented or semi-oxidized tea which gives a slightly reddish green brew that has a subtle presence of the flavor.

Black tea – the most popular, fully oxidized or fermented tea that gives a deep reddish color when brewed. It is the most invigorating of all the varieties.

Pu Erh – is not so common but is an older version of the black tea. The tea leaves are aged over years like wine and some varieties can be as old as 10 to 50 years.

To enjoy tea you will need to be very careful about some matters like heating water in pyrex or stainless steel kettles and all utensils should not have any other lingering smell.  The water should be only warm for white tea and hot for oolong and green tea. For pu erh or black tea, fully boiled water is necessary. Normally one teaspoon of tea is added for one cup of tea, but the amount may vary according to the quality of the tea and the choice of the person. However, make sure that you use loose leaves so that they can infuse fully to give their actual color, flavor and aroma.

If you go through the benefits of tea, you will be amazed that tea can prevent a host of ailments like cancer and cancerous tumors, lowers cholesterol, is an anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-aging, and works as a stimulant though low in caffeine.
