Baked Spring RollsSpring rolls are a delicious Chinese starter that are very popular the world over. Spring rolls consist of a pastry filled with a lightly seasoned meat or veggie filling. Spring rolls are delicious and easy to make.

The crispy texture of the pastry and the wonderfully flavored stuffing combine to make spring rolls truly lip-smacking. However most recipes call for spring rolls to be deep-fried in oil, making them greasy and high in calories.

The recipe discussed in this article will tell you how to make delicious and healthy baked spring rolls. Instead of deep frying the spring rolls, we will be baking them hence making them low in calorie and very healthy. The stuffing is a combination of mixed veggies and shredded chicken flavored with Asian herbs and sauces. Read on to find out how to make these delicious and healthy baked spring rolls.

Ingredients

2 cups refined flour
2 spoons butter
1 spoon salt
1 cup water
1 cup cooked and shredded boneless
chicken
2 spoons finely minced garlic
Salt to taste
2 spoons freshly ground black pepper
1 spoon crushed paprika
2 spoons finely chopped fresh ginger
3 green onions finely chopped
2 cups shredded cabbage
1 medium carrot shredded
2 spoons soy sauce
1 spoon Chinese hot sauce
1 egg

Method

To make spring rolls, first prepare the pastry dough. For this combine, flour with salt and butter and add water little by little to form a smooth and shiny dough. Keep this dough aside covered with a moist cloth. To make the filling, heat oil in a pan and then add the minced garlic and minced ginger. Sauté the ginger and garlic for a few seconds.

After this, add the shredded cabbage and the shredded carrots and cook on high flame till the veggies get cooked. Ensure the veggies do not get over-cooked. They must remain crunchy and crisp. Once the veggies are done, add the cooked and shredded boneless chicken and sauté it well with the veggies.

Then add salt, freshly ground black pepper, and crushed paprika to chicken and the veggies. Stir the chicken and veggies very well with these spices so that everything gets evenly mixed. Next, add the soy sauce and Chinese hot sauce to the mix. Once again, stir fry all the ingredients at high flame so that all moisture gets evaporated while the flavors and textures of the veggies and chicken gets enhanced. Lastly add the chopped green onions and mix well. Your stuffing for the spring roll is ready. Keep it aside for it cool.

To make the pastry for the spring roll, take the prepared dough and flatten it as thin as possible using a rolling pin. Cut out medium seized rectangles from the flattened dough. To make the spring roll, take one rectangular pastry and place some of the stuffing in the center. Fold the sides and form a tight roll. Use a little water to seal the edges of the spring roll.

Prepare all the spring rolls in similar fashion.Pre-heat your oven to 425 degree Fahrenheit and place the spring rolls on a baking tray. Brush the spring rolls with beaten egg whites and oil. Bake the spring rolls for 20 minutes till they turn golden brown on the outside. Serve these healthy baked spring rolls with your favorite spicy dipping sauce.
