In today’s world, almost 70 percent of people use non-sugar substances known as artificial sweeteners having very low calories in place of sugar or any other sweetener, which are loaded with high calories.

Diabetic people and all those who are trying hard to lose weight are the main consumers of these artificial sweeteners. It easily satisfies the craving of sweet items.

Last few years have claimed sugar to be the major reason for various body ailments, which have uplifted the name and use of artificial sweeteners in the recent past. FDA has basically approved 5 artificial sweeteners- aspartame, acesulfame potassium, saccharine, sucralose and neotame, etc.

Aspartame intake in large doses can cause headaches, migraine problem in a person. It can also lead to various neuropsychiatric ailments like visual hallucinations, isolated dizziness, mood swings, panic attacks and manic episodes.

People having valve prolapses, if regular use aspartame sugar-free formula suffers from greater risk of neuropsychiatric ailments. You would be disheartened to read that intake of aspartame for longer periods can give rise to seizures, especially in children.

Long before saccharin was thought to cause serious ailment called cancer. But now researches and studies have proved that this artificial sweetener is no way related to cancer.

But, saccharin can cause eczema, purigo, purities, hypersensitivity, uticaria and photosensitivity in adults and children.

Excessive saccharin intake can also cause tongue blisters, tachycaedia, nausea, diarrhea, wheezing, dieresis, headache, fixed eruptions and sensory neuropathy. Saccharine-infused milk can lead to hypertonia, opisthtonos, insomnia and strabismus in infants.

You would be surprised to read that acesulfame potassium is 200 times sweeter than your normal sugar.

But its sad to reveal that excessive intake of acesulfame potassium can cause cancer due to presence of methylene chloride. Its long term usage can also lead to depression, kidney ailments, nausea, headaches, mental confusion, liver problem and visual disturbances.

Sucralose is also known as splenda and can cause shrinking of thymus glands in people. It can also cause enlargement of kidneys and liver.
