South Beach Diet

South beach diet is a widely accepted diet and is based on the type of carbohydrate foods. It works on the principle that the carbohydrates that a person consumes gets converted in to sugar which in turn increases the blood sugar thus causing a spike in insulin level.

This insulin in turn promotes the storage of fat and there will be fluctuations in sugar level which results in craving for food. Hence south beach diet is based more on low glycemic carbohydrate foods which maintains a constant sugar level and avoids food craving. South beach diet promotes the usage of healthy fats while inhibiting the unhealthy ones.



Induction Phase

This diet program consists of three phases of which the first phase which is otherwise called the induction phase is a 14 day period. During this period the person is not allowed to take any sugar or starch foods and is aimed to cleanse the body.

The food that has to be avoided includes rice, bread, pasta, potatoes, fruits, baked foods etc. During this phase alcohol, wine or beer is not permitted. Among dairy products no fat or low fat milk, buttermilk, yogurt etc can be consumed. During this phase most of the people lose 8 to 13 pounds.

Reintroduce the Carbs Phase

After the completion of 14 days of induction phase the person can reintroduce some of the foods that were prohibited earlier. Some of them are carrots, tomatoes, onions etc along with little pasta for those pasta maniacs.

Fruits can also be reintroduced during this phase but one must be very selective in choosing fruits and pick those having low glycemic index such as cherries, peaches, pears etc. Continue this phase till one reaches the targeted weight and if followed closely will lose 1 to 2 pounds per week.

Final Phase Diet for Life Time

It should a diet that contains more normal and natural foods in normal proportion. The person can have whole grain, lean protein and whole wheat food and is simply a lifestyle change. Otherwise it regains all the lost weight. The best suggestion is to eat small meals more frequently and choose the right fruits and vegetables as snacks in between meals.
