Spinach Power

Remember the cartoon serial – “Pop eye the sailor man”? The cartoon revolves around an ordinary sailor man – “pop eye” who gets transformed into a muscle man of super duper strength when he consumes a tin of spinach! This may not be exactly true, but spinach does contain a lot of nutritive elements!

Spinach facts: Medical researches have proved that 1 cup of spinach is indeed a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin B2,vitamin B6, magnesium, iron, calcium and other minerals. It is also a rich source of folic acid and is low in cholesterol and fat. Spinach is grown and relished in all parts of the world! Every country has a dish that involves spinach. This is not surprising when considered the fact that spinach is  great, when raw or cooked, and flourishes in harsh climates like winter.

Cooking spinach: One can get maximum benefits from spinach when consumed as soon as it is bought. Refrigerating it for a long time reduces its nutritive value. It becomes mushy and squashed. Cooking for a long time also reduces its value. It should be cooked lightly by blanching in hot water or steaming. Spinach is best consumed in the form of raw salads or juices. Can be combined with citrus fruits that are rich in Vitamin C.

Benefits: The high grade of iron in spinach helps supply fresh oxygen to the body by reactivating the red blood cells. This helps combat anaemia. The chlorophyll (green pigment) and carotene present in spinach are powerful anti-oxidants and anti-cancer agents.

The high fiber content in spinach helps clean up the digestive tracts. It is a good remedy for stomach indigestion and constipation. Spinach juice, being a good source of folic acid and iron, provides the required nutrients for pregnant and lactating mothers. The presence of vitamin A prevents eye problems from cropping up, especially during old age.

Spinach is recommended for diabetics also as it stabilizes blood sugar. Vitamin K in spinach helps in clotting of blood. This is a great choice for people wanting to lose weight as it is rich in fiber and low in calories.
