Treatment for Gout
There are certain elements in the body which may cause health problems if it is present in excess quantity. One such element is uric acid. Uric acid is derived from metabolism of a group of organic compounds named purines. When body is unable to metabolize uric acid, mostly due to unknown reasons, it accumulates in abnormal quantities in the blood and body tissues. As a result, a condition named gout occurs.
One of the most commonly reported ailments reported in the United States is arthritis. Out of this, approximately 3 million people are affected by gout. Gout is a type of arthritis, predominantly seen in middle aged males. Even the famous Benjamin Franklin was a victim to Gout.
Gout is characterized by severe localized pain, tenderness and inflammation of joints. Generally the big toe, wrists, ankles and knees get affected. If gout persists for many years, uric acid starts depositing in tissues as crystals. It is noticed typically around the ear or diagnosed as uric acid stones in the kidneys.
High uric acid levels in the blood with single joint pain are the diagnostic criteria for gout. Apart from drugs that eliminate uric acid from the blood, low purine diet is commonly prescribed. Purine rich foods such as meat and meat products, organ meat, meat extracts, anchovies, scallops, sweet breads, sardines, and game must be avoided. Moderate sources of purine like cauliflower, asparagus, spinach, peas, beans and wheat bran can be taken in limited quantities. Alcohol must not be consumed excessively.
In general, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is beneficial for gout. A minimum of 3 liters water needs to be consumed to prevent accumulation of uric acid in blood and kidneys. A high carbohydrate and low fat diet plan has been found useful to treat gout. A meal plan giving 55% calories from carbohydrates, 30% calories from fat, less than 300 mcg cholesterol and moderate protein will help to control uric acid levels. Tofu, raw vegetables, milk and milk products can be consumed liberally as they will keep the urine alkaline and prevent complications arising from gout.
This disease can be controlled by regular exercise, weight maintenance, healthy diet, plenty of water and avoiding fasts. This will help in keeping the body in balance and prevent frequent gout attacks.
